I 'm not sure how I feel about this. I have been wrestling with this idea lately. Does writing really weaken our ability to memorize? I actually have a different experience. I feel like when I write things, I am better able to remember them. I have, for instance, been reading Kierkegaard's works, and I write phrases on pieces of paper - phrases that I like the most from his books. And during the process I have realized that I tend to remember those sentences that I write.
I feel like writing is definitely an extension of yourself, but it is also a process of becoming, of not just the text, but also of the writer himself. Hmmm…now I don't know where I am going with this! I guess it's because I'm writing!!
I guess what I want to ask you is that is there a book/research/article that you know of, which talks about writing and memory? Or do you have any thoughts on it?
αληθειαhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693374621360594481noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7461948747659071092.post-38052327749548584262014-05-27T22:53:47.981-07:002014-05-27T22:53:47.981-07:00I forgot about that! He's right in that it's all about disappearance, self-effacement — whether it's porn or sports or tv or knitting.

I'm curious what you come up with on the Phaedrus connection. I thought that the film, like Plato's dialogue, has quite a complicated take on sex vs. love. Although, for the film, I think it's an argument about the social and the posture of the self towards the social. In a way, I can't help but to side with Levitt's argument in that if, like you say, the fantasy (often) is the sex, then what makes porn so bad compared to those chick flicks - both, after all, make us feel good (or bad, or horny).
This film also reminds me a little of Plato's Phaedrus (or at least an interpretation of it), or better still, Gorgias, in which Socrates creates this distinction between love and sex. But since Phaedrus is so complicated, especially in terms of the indirect moves that it makes, I'll have to do more thinking about how this film is similar to and/or different from either of the two Platonic dialogues.
αληθειαhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693374621360594481noreply@blogger.com
